Moroso 7-Quart Oil Pan Installation Comments in my 86 Mustang.

During my engine rebuild I chose a Moroso 7 quart oil pan to install on the bottom. The images on the company site provided information about the width and other hints on its install.

I had the block assembled with the heads on and ran a test fit prior to the final installation. I discovered several installation concerns.

1. The pan is 13 inches wide. I am running MAC full length headers. It barely fit as clearance on the driver side between the header and the pan is about 1/4". To reduce the possibility of heat transfer I wrapped the header in that area with Thermo-Tec header tape.

2. The dipstick would not fit past the headers using the designated hole (the forward one). Well, I could make it fit, but it twisted and bent in too many planes so I was able to pull the stick out,,,once. I was never able to get it back in again. As a result, I used the hole provided for sensors. All I needed was an adapter to hold the dipstick's pipe thread into the pan's larger threaded hole. Using this position I was able to bend the dipstick tube less to get it by the headers.  (a possible substitute might be a dipstick from a Explorer.  I noticed that the dipstick is twisted and does not bind when undergoing multiple bends.)

3. The clearance at the front cross member for the main sump was very close. A bit of grinding on the cross member provided the needed clearance.

A couple of comments

1. The main sump has its drain plug pointing forward, directly into the cross-member. Looks like it will be a mess when the oil gets changed.  I made a small catch can from a brake fluid can.

2. I used a 93 Mustang starter. It fit fine.
